Break in Glenveagh ride-out tradition

In a break with tradition, the annual St Patrick’s Day ride-out through Glenveagh National Park is not going ahead this year. James has found it too difficult to comply with Glenveagh’s increasingly strict conditions for allowing the riders through the park. A lot of people have very fond memories of the annual event which ended in Churchill with steaming stew at Wilkens pub. With luck we’ll ride through Glenveagh again in the future.

Sunday falls prey to weather but Friday provides enough entertainment for a month of Sundays

A spell of old-school March weather played havoc with many activities this weekend and the cross country training day at Lenamore on Sunday didn’t escape the axe. Although Lenamore has very free draining ground, at least one of the fields was just too wet to make training feasible. As things turned out, it was a blessing in disguise. Neither horses nor riders could possibly have benefitted from exposure to gales, constant driving rain and freezing squalls.

But both horses and riders benefitted greatly from Friday night’s team building and mounted obstacle challenge at Eddie Gallagher’s arena in Ballybofey. Liam and Clodagh Barry proved brilliant trainers and the session lasted a good two and a half hours. All sorts of teams were successfully built. The evening began with a warm up session of girls versus boys, with Nadine and Libby taking on Damien and Francis. Tommy and Joanne finally completed their circumnavigation of Ballybofey in time to join the second warm-up group along with Rachel, Leo, Maura and Mick.

At that stage it was time to build the big teams for the evening. With five riders aside, the mounts split naturally along a colour divide into the White Horses versus the Rest. Grace, Angel, Hannah and Doolin (with Hannah competing for her team first with Maura and fifth with Francis) took on Millie, Mollie, Armstrong, Dante and Dancer. The Rest had the upper hand to begin with but the White Horses rallied magnificently towards the end of the game sequence. Between acts Damien announced his candidacy for the Irish Adult Mounted Games squad by reaching down from Millie to pick up a bottle off the ground — and that was in addition to springing blithely back on board after the occasional misfired flag, sock or bottle forced a mid-game dismount.

On the White side of affairs Doolin demonstrated the value of schooling in local pony races with some impressive acceleration down the arena. His speed was matched by his super manoeuverability but he was let down time and again by his inept rider who frittered away all the advantage he offered the team. In contrast, Grace’s brilliant efforts were complemented by Leo’s speed on his own two pegs. On the darker side of the arena, Armstrong also demonstrated his characteristic turn of foot and it didn’t take long for both himself and Tommy to master the obstacle challenges they met. Dante illustrated the beauty of the family pony that happily turns its hoof to anything while Rachel was in her element, finally in a position to practice what she preaches to her pupils.

Throughout the evening Liam and Clodagh offered all sorts of tips and advice on how to successfully negotiate the challenges at the highest speed with the greatest degree of accuracy and safety. They both have an immense amount of experience as well as great patience and an invaluable sense of humour.

In a final team building effort, Rachel and Tommy ended up together in the sack, bringing the curtain down on a memorable evening. Even Dante and Armstrong were laughing!

Team building & obstacle challenge this Friday evening

Francis has booked Gallagher’s arena in Ballybofey for this Friday’s team building & obstacle challenge evening. Francis, a master designer of Le Trec and Treasure Hunt courses, will be joined by guest pony club games expert, Liam Barry. Liam has trained the East Donegal Pony Club games team for the past few years and his daughter, Clodagh, was this year selected for the Irish national mounted games team. Some of you will also remember that Liam was the show jumping judge at our first North West League in 2009.

Kick off is at 7pm. Contact Francis on 086 372 2542 for further details and/or to confirm that you plan to attend.

New product for ‘Tried & Tested’ arrives

Last autumn Damien did the leg work on the first product we received for the Ireland’s Horse & Pony Magazine feature “Tried & Tested”. That time it was an all-purpose Bucas Shamrock cooler which arrived in Millie-size. He was very impressed and gave it a high rating on his feedback sheet.

Now we’ve received two containers of Horse First’s “Keep Me Sound“, an all-in-one supplement which the manufacturers say will aid joints, muscles, hooves, skin and digestion. It’s intended for all ages of horse but will show the quickest results with middle-aged or older animals. So, we’re looking for two candidates to test the product. If you’re interested in trying the supplement and reporting on your experience, get in touch with Orla or Libby.

Find out more about the manufacturer on the Horse First website.

An armchair night to remember

The prospect of a talk on “safe towing and transport of horses” doesn’t exactly get the adrenalin flowing but the sober topic did nothing to deter a large troop of members from showing up for our armchair event at Tir na nOg last Friday. The original intention was to have a professional expert on hand but this proved impossible on the night. So, embodying a lot of personal experience and armed with an impressive collection of state-of-the-art information from government departments, car manufacturers, trailer makers and sundry others, Francis presented the subject himself.

Well, not quite by himself, as things turned out… The combined towing experiences of the members present meant that he had plenty of assistance from the peanut gallery. Francis had merely to touch on some particular aspect of transporting horses and the floodgates were flattened by a torrent of opinions, anecdotes and controversy. He scarcely had a chance to complete a single sentence yet he expertly orchestrated the mob and succeeded in planting all the right questions in people’s heads. The answers to these questions may not always have been immediately apparent but they were generally there at the end of the ensuing discussion.

The informative and highly entertaining talk was eventually concluded, the contributors were reined in, and everybody sat back to enjoy a few drinks and some social time without the horses. It was a great night out. Many thanks, Francis.

Benbulben Spring Show Schedule, Sunday 3 April

The timing of Benbulben’s Spring Show this year should suit everybody who has been competing at the North West League. The show takes place on Sunday 3 April, exactly a week after our league final so horses and riders should be finely tuned. The event always has a large attendance on account of its location bang in the centre of the Western region.

The schedule has been published today and it includes the welcome (?!!) sight of dressage tests for the the first time in our 2011 calendar. Note that dressage entries should be made by Thursday 31 March to allow the organisers to plan things. AIRC dressage tests are available on line from the AIRC website and all others are available from Orla.

In an interesting departure from the norm, the Intermediate & Above novelty class will take place between the individual Intermediate and Advanced Intermediate classes. This will certainly suit the Intermediate contingent and will hopefully be equally successful as a warm-up for the AIs and Opens.

Getting tight at the top: Full results and league points after NWL Show 3

Things are hotting up in the North West league and the Shows 4 and 5 leave everything to play for. In the best spirit of a friendly league, it looks as if practically every class will come down to the wire.

North West League provides another great day’s competition

Everybody has their own approach to preparing for a competition and most riders know what routine is likely to get the best tune out of their horse on the big day. Mick stuck to his own recipe this weekend, taking Angel to the Donegal Harriers’ meet at Baronscourt for three hours of exhilarating cross country warm-up on Saturday, priming her for today’s third leg of the North West League. (Admittedly it was no great hardship for Mick to go through this lengthy warm-up exercise!) Angel rewarded him in spades by delivering the winning round in the Advanced Primary class. Mick had finally won something!

All in all, it was another very successful day for the North West League, albeit not without some drama. Early in the day, Cyril took a tumble from Lady in the warm-up arena and suffered a painful shoulder injury. Maura whisked him off to hospital where a thorough check revealed no broken body parts. Cyril returned to watch some of the later action from the canteen area, his arm comfortably accommodated in a good sling. Get well soon, Cyril.

The other significant pain in the day was endured by the Intermediate level fraternity who gnashed their teeth as, one by one, rider after rider racked up time faults. With the judge sticking to her guns, just two competitors out of a large field made it to the jump off. Finola Murphy of Benbulben Riding Club demonstrated all her skill, experience and competition craft to get safely through round one and adeptly conquer Tommy on Armstrong in the two-way jump-off. It was a very well-deserved win.

Liz and Enda performed excellently once again in the Primary class but had to settle for second and third placings as Donegal Gaeltacht Secretary Roisin Magee rode the winning round on Lawrence’s Jenny’s Jigsaw.

One particular fence — a decent lump of a spread constructed of white poles and ridden off an awkward enough line — proved the bogey all day long. Nadine and Molly tackled it in memorable fashion in the Advanced Intermediate class and survived to complete an otherwise beautiful clear round. Nobody else managed the feat, leaving Nadine with an excellent victory.

Once again, thanks to everybody who helped out on the day. Roll on 20 March!

We’ll post the results as soon as we have them. Enjoy the pictures in our Gallery and keep your eye on the Gaeltacht’s site for further goodies.

Bruno, a really lovely 3-year old Arab/Connemara cross, is for sale. He was recently broken in by Rachel Carton who thought the world of him and believes he’d make a lovely prospect for somebody with the time to bring him on. He’s a good 14.2hh, bay, and has a great temperament and attitude. He’s still an entire but with excellent manners.

Owner’s number to follow. In the meantime, contact Rachel on 086 161 7087.
