A fine Carrickfinn fire

It was by all accounts the best ever Carrickfinn fire! A million thanks to Damien for organising yet another weather-resistant weekend in one of the finest spots on the planet.

The road to Carrickfinn

Any sane person looking out at today’s weather wouldn’t even countenance the thought of camping at Carrickfinn in 10 days’ time. Luckily we live on the Atlantic seaboard so it’s likely to be sunny and springlike again in the morning.

Our annual pilgrimage to the Rosses takes place earlier than usual this year to avoid a clash with the team show jumping qualifier in Sligo on Sunday 17 May. We’ll be heading down the road on Saturday 9 May, with all available fingers and toes crossed for a dry weekend.

Please let Damien know now if you’re planning on making the journey.

Great Easter ride-out with Dawn in Drumkeen

It’s always good to explore new territory and Dawn’s active participation in the club has brought us new scope for adventure in the Drumkeen area. Our Good Friday group of riders — Keary, Anne, Leo, Shauna and Dawn herself — met at Dawn’s homeplace and rode out for an hour through forestry roads and back down to the nearby quarry.

Gary treated everybody to fish and chips afterwards from the local fish van, setting the hospitality bar high for the coming ride-out season! Thanks to Dawn and Gary for a really enjoyable expedition.

Ride-out in Rathmullan area, Friday 8 August

A huge number of our members are making their way to Dublin for the Horse Show at the RDS — one of the truly great events on the equestrian calendar annually. For anybody who isn’t Dublin bound and is looking for entertainment, Libby will lead a ride-out in the Rathmullan area this Friday evening. Exact departure point and route will be determined based on the number of riders and their level of ambition.

Contact Libby by Thursday evening on 086 830 1392, if you plan to go along.

Ride-out with Jenny, Ards Forest area, Friday 27 June

This Friday evening Jenny offers members an opportunity to discover her backyard in the area around Creeslough, Ards Forest and Muckish. Paddy, Rachel and Libby enjoyed a fabulous route through the area with her in mid-winter, some time ago. The scenery and natural environment are stunning and will be a joy at the peak of midsummer.

Contact Jenny on 086 0844 748 for full details, if you plan to go along.

Ride-out with Denis in Killygordon, Friday 9 May

Any of you who joined Denis and Leo for their fundraising ride-out from Crossroads, Killygordon a while ago (see Gallery) will appreciate just what a lovely spot the Finn Valley really is. With surprising ascents and unexpected high terrain, the views in every direction are marvellous. Small country roads and lanes make for peaceful riding.

If you’re interested in Joining Denis for a ride-out this Friday, contact him on 087 925 8996 and let him know. Departure time is 7pm and the meeting point is Denis’s home place.

Ride-out from Hillsborough Farm, Good Friday, 18 April

Since none of us will have any alternative plans for going to the pub on Good Friday, Louise is expecting a great turn-out for her ride-out from the Edwards Family home base, Hillsborough Farm. The ride, approximately an hour and a half long, will depart at 7pm and takes riders around the beautiful landscape on the shores of Lough Swilly.

Contact Louise by Thursday midday on 085  850 8941, if you’re planning to go along.

Pictures capture magical ride-out at Hillsborough Farm

Anybody who hasn’t yet seen the photos of the recent fundraising ride-out from Hillsborough Farm will enjoy the collection posted on the Glenleary website. The shots were taken by Gillian and Annette and capture better than any words the beauty and spirit of the day. Well done everybody and thank you for a memorable afternoon.

Guaranteed enjoyment at Hillsborough Farm Charity Ride, Sunday 6 October

Nobody knows better than Mary Finneran how to organise a ride-out and barbeque. This Sunday’s event at Hillsborough Farm near Ramelton offers options for all levels of riders (and horses), as well as entertainment for the unmounted followers with their canine friends.

Depending on your level of ambition, the rides kick off at 12 noon, 1pm and 1.30pm. There’s a dog show with a difference at 3pm.

For full details see the Charity Ride flyer.
