There’s a real treat in store for anybody heading for the Training Day at Dirraw Farm this Sunday. Times and instructors are now in place. A big thanks to Ruth and Rachael for all the work on this front.
Training Day 2014_Letterkenny
The big day is approaching fast and the running order for teams at the RDS qualifier has now been published — and Letterkenny is first into the lions’ den! No better man for that job than Leo on the aptly named Cool! Best of luck everybody.

Since some form of structural reorganisation of the region is on the agenda, there will be a meeting of the five Donegal clubs this Tuesday evening in Tir na nOg in advance of the western region AGM on Friday at Markree Castle in Sligo. As always, all members are welcome to attend. If you’d like to raise an issue but can’t attend, contact Cormac or Libby in advance of Tuesday’s meeting.
The countdown to Sunday’s team show jumping qualifier in Sligo is on. 24 teams will line out on the day for this most hotly contested of all competitions. We’ll be represented by two fine teams, as follows:
Damien on Trial and Error
Nadine on Molly
Anne on (Kiltown Miss) Molly
Leo on Cool
Cormac on Charlotte
Francis on Zak
Tanya on Al
Keary on Arthur
It will be a memorable day’s competition with a berth at the final in the RDS as the holy grail. Our neighbours will be there in force with three Donegal Gaeltacht teams, two from Inishowen and one from Tirconaill vying for their chance to compete at the Dublin Horse Show. With Benbulben fielding six teams, they’re bound to become the punching bag for every other club in the region.
The more supporters we can send to cheer on the team, the better. There’s always a need for foot soldiers who can hold a horse for a crucial 10-minutes while our riders walk the course, or who can manhandle the jumps in the warm-up arena to make sure that the preparation goes as smoothly as possible.
It’s a great day out and a great people- and horse-watching spectacle. Plan on being there! Here’s the full run-down for the day:
TSJC Regional Qualifier Programme 2013
While several of our regular dressage riders were letting their hair down at Carrickfinn this weekend, the diligent Gaeltachts travelled to Ballinasloe for the regional team dressage qualifier. They hit the jackpot and returned with a great haul of rosettes.
One of their two teams qualified by finishing in second place while the second team just missed out in finishing fourth. Rudy and Rachael qualified in the individual section. And to top off the dressage achievements, Patricia finished first and second in the Open individual class followed by Laura in third. These dressage achievements were matched by show jumping success for Lawrence, Rudi, Patricia and Laura.
Well done everybody. We know you’ll do Donegal proud at the National Championships in August.
It’s a long haul from Lenamore to Tubberbride but Cormac and Charlotte made the journey together with some Lenamore-based members of the Inishowen club to compete at Benbulben Riding Club’s Spring Show. Although he wasn’t in the ribbons on the day, he successfully qualified for the Masters Final and looks forward to his date with destiny in Mullingar. Congratulations to Patricia Warren of the Gaeltachts who won the qualifier.
Qualification came at a price after Cormac and Charlotte took a nasty fall in front of a jump in the deep going of the warm-up arena. Happily horse and rider survived to tell the tale but both will be nursing sore muscles and bones for a few days to come. Let’s hope they’re fully recovered in time to do themselves justice at our Derby & Dressage show next Sunday!
Anybody who wants a dry run for the RDS qualifier at the end of May has a great opportunity this Sunday at Benbulben’s show jumping and dressage show. The event, which doubles as our area’s Masters Series Qualifier, takes place at Kerin’s equestrian centre in Tubberbride, Collooney. There’s always a great attendance and a cracking atmosphere on the day.
Benbulben Spring Show & Masters Qualifier | Schedule
Not many members travel too far afield for competitions these days but it’s worth keeping an eye on the Western Region calendar for national qualifiers and Benbulben Riding Club’s events. Sligo is still reasonably achievable.
Western Region Calendar 2013
One unfortunate bit of news is that the regional qualifier for the team dressage championships will be held in distant Galway. Maybe we should switch our team dressage focus to the Riding Clubs Festival in Stradbally instead?
After all the training and practice at our league, enthusiastic members might want to consider forming a raiding party to plunder some prizes at Benbulben Riding Club’s autumn show on Sunday 18 November. The event takes place at Kerins’s Equestrian Centre, Tubberbride, Collooney, just south of Sligo.
Benbulben RC November Show Schedule
Ground conditions have necessitated a change in date for the Benbulben Crossjump. At least it’s still on the calendar, now on Sunday 9 September.
