Border Counties 1-Day Event, Sunday 21 July

The AIRC National Horse Trials Championships take place this year in Carlow — a highly unlikely destination for our cash-strapped members. That won’t prevent competitors travelling to the nearest qualifying event at Cloncaw Equestrian Centre in Monaghan. Over the years the Border Counties ODE has proved a most enjoyable competition over a great cross country course. Tales are still being told of Nadine’s experience with the Giant’s Teeth and Tanya’s encounter with the water jump!

Entries close on Monday 15 July.

Dismal lack of support fails to dampen Derby fun for those who turned up on the day

One has to pose the question “Is it really worth it?” after our third annual Derby & Dressage Show attracted fewer participants than ever this weekend. The answer, for those who turned out to compete, is a resounding “Yes!”. It’s well worth the effort to enjoy jumping and dressage in beautiful conditions over a great course with ample space. Whether we can continue to justify the financial outlay is another question which will be reserved for our AGM later in the year.

Entries were pitifully low and the gloss was taken off victories for Hazel in the Primary Derby and Louise in the Primary Dressage by the absence of competition. Their wins were all the more impressive for the fact that they turned out, made the effort, and performed with great credit in both classes.

Advanced Primary enjoyed slightly higher numbers and boasted one of the three stalwart Benbulbens who made the trip north to support us. Well done Melinda on a great win in the AP Derby. Lawrence reluctantly relinquished his cup but has his eyes set firmly on regaining it in 2014. Special credit has to go to Christopher who rode a magnificent round on Connacht to finish third, just weeks after starting to work with this game, honest and handsome horse.

As always, the Intermediates had the keenest competition of the day and 10 participants from three clubs took part in an entertaining and challenging class. Again, it was Benbulben who took top honours but there were cracking performances from many members, most notably Paddy and Tanya who were both desperately unlucky to rack up 4 faults a-piece.

Four Advanced Intermediate riders fought out the honours over 1 metre with Jody Carr of Inishowen rewarded for her support of the show with a narrow win.

The Intermediate & Above Speed Pairs provided the most fun and entertainment of the whole day, topped only by the cavalry charge of the final lap of honour. All the competitors in the class took part, enjoying one last blast around a fabulous arena to end a great day.

In the more sedate ambience of the dressage arena entries were as bad, if not worse than for the Derby. That didn’t prevent several of our own members from chalking up good victories after riding convincing tests under the eagle eye of Petra Kucklick. Louise, Vera, Libby and Nadine came out on top in their respective grades.

A very big thank you is due to everybody who turned out to participate in the event. Thanks also to our officials — Seamus, Petra, Cormac and Cormac’s assistants in the judging box. Thanks to Emma and Lauren of East Donegal Pony Club for putting in a long day getting slowly frozen on call-up duty. Thanks to all our members who helped on the day taking entries, scribing for both judges, and organising rosettes and prizes. Thanks to Lawrence for doing such a remarkable impression of a PA system when that piece of equipment was finally retired for the day.

The biggest thank you of all goes to our hosts, the Edwards family of Hillsborough Farm, who again so generously gave us their magnificent fields and supported us 100% at all times with smiles on their faces. Thank you.

Thanks to Rosaleen Harkin and Shaun Brennan for sending on their collection of photos from the day, and to Hillary Moore for driving Libby’s camera while Libby enjoyed competing. If anybody else has photos send them on and we’ll add them to the Gallery. David Carr also captured some of the action and his shots can be viewed on the Equi-Snap website.

Course up : Let the competition begin!

Friday evening wasn’t warm but the sun shone and the grass was green and healthy beneath our feet. If God spares us torrential rain, we should have nice conditions for tomorrow’s big event.

Call to action stations : Derby preparation already underway

It looks like we’ll get away with it this time. It’s not going to be blazing sunshine but our Derby & Dressage Show is all set to go ahead this Sunday at Hillsborough Farm. The work to make it all happen has already begun as Francis, Rachel,  Damien and others haul jumps from the four corners of the county to our greenfield site near Ramelton.

Formal course building and preparation of the show ground begins at 7pm this evening. Please come along well armed with energy, initiative and good humour. There’s a lot to be done. Louise, Rachel and John will be directing operations and one long evening’s labour should see the job completed.

On Sunday, the most important task of all is to bring your horse and compete! If you don’t feel like jumping, ride a dressage test. Everybody can rise to that! All the effort becomes worthwhile when competitors enjoy the event.

Most of the standard tasks such as entries, call-up, and both dressage and show jumping scribes have been allocated in advance (and a large thank you is due to our friends in East Donegal Pony Club for their part in the rota). However, there are countless tasks  to be done on the day and everybody’s help will be much appreciated. Don’t wait to be asked — offer your services voluntarily. We’ll need plenty of hands in the arena. It’s large and generally Derby classes see few clear rounds so there’ll be plenty of poles to be picked up.

Above all, come out and enjoy the social side of  preparing the show, participating and spectating at what promises to be a wonderful event.

Gloomy Midsummer brightened by freedom of the fields

Our 2012 trip to the Jacobs homestead began in torrential rain which cleared miraculously before our horses were unloaded. Twelve months later the weather was working the opposite way round and Audrey issued a missive at 6pm: “Hi everybody. Just load up and come on before the rain gets here!”

Nadine, Damien, Paddy, Libby, Francis, Maura, Anne, Keary and Tanya answered the call. They arrived to discover a brilliant collection of jumps ranging from rustic poles to milk churns to mattresses, as well as a dressage arena and a smashing stone wall. There was no shortage of challenges for man or beast.

The ground was holding and sticky, threatening to create all sorts of unwanted work for Damien but luckily all horses held onto their precious shoes. Anne’s youngster Star made it all look easy as she floated over the ground. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Fenway almost regretted all the grass he had eaten since last being ridden at Stradbally as he hauled his rotund figure around the silage fields.

Nadine and Emily headed for home early while Cormac arrived late and took over the plum ride on Molly just in time for the stone wall session.

Everybody did what they were comfortable with and it was a hugely enjoyable and easy going evening rounded off with first class refreshments. Cecil joined everybody for the tea and diplomatically averted his eyes from the glaring tracks ploughed through his precious ground.

Thank you, Audrey, Cecil and Tanya, for another memorable experience.

Pre-Derby practice and lots more, Castleshanaghan, Friday

Trips to Audrey and Tanya’s homeplace at Castleshanaghan are amongst the jewels in the riding club calendar. Cecil’s immaculate fields make the perfect play ground for summertime riding. The horses love it and the riders do too.

This year, with the Derby & Dressage Show just a week away, our hosts are going to conjure up a dressage arena and some derby and cross country style jumps to give us some scope to practice before the big day. The cross country hoodlums will also be free to enjoy a good stretch around the extensive silage fields. What more could a soul wish for on Midsummer’s Day!

The weather looks like being reasonably cooperative and with luck we’ll get to enjoy our unique position on the northern tip of the country on the day when it matters most. Let Audrey know on 087 285 3687, if you plan on coming along.
