Introducing another two new members

Membership of the club is at present so healthy that we’ve almost let a new face slip through the cracks. Rachel McKimmon joined us in late January and some of you may have met her at the first leg of the league when she was part of Martina’s gang.

Rachel is a highly experienced young horsewoman from the Strabane area. She runs a very well regarded yard where she breaks and brings on young horses. Martina’s Smuggler is one of her long-term residents. Tanya’s Jack was a short-term resident when he visited for breaking two years ago. Rachel joins us at Advanced Open level and we hope to see her out as soon as her intended riding club mount recovers from injury.

Tommy McGettigan joined us in the past couple of weeks and has already shown his competitive intentions by winning at the North West League last Sunday. Tommy’s background is on the racing circuit but we hope he gets plenty of enjoyment from our slightly more sedate variety of equestrian activity. He’s already more than familiar with the club since his Ballyare yard is home to Nadine and Damien’s mares as well as to Erica’s Britney.

League results show scope of club’s enterprise and ability

Roisin McGee of the Gaeltachts has once more done her sums in super-quick time and we can already see the results from yesterday’s second leg of the North West League. While our senior riders performed most successfully at the opening leg of the league, this time it was the turn of our Primary, Advanced Primary and Intermediate riders to shine.

We’ve already heard how Tommy stole the Intermediate show on Armstrong and noted how Enda and Liz filled the top two slots in the Primary class. But in a league of his own comes Keary who won the AP class on Anne’s lovely mare, Kiltown Miss Molly. Keary has been keeping his own horse, Captain Clover Joe, to the hunting field this winter but Molly proved an able show jumping substitute. Most people were aware that Keary had borrowed Anne’s horse. What they mightn’t have known was that he had also borrowed her lucky britches, completing his double-clear round at double-quick tempo so that he could dismount rapidly, relieve the pressure, and hand them back to her in time for her Intermediate class!

Well done everybody.

New members out in force for North West League, Show 2

Two weeks can seem like a lifetime for anybody looking forward to a leg of the North West League. On Sunday the wait proved worth it, as always, and Show 2 of the series was a wonderful success. The number of trailers and lorries already squarely parked by 11 o’clock sharp was a fair indication of the level of interest this league generates.

From Letterkenny’s point of view the highlight was the number of new members out enjoying the competition. Early in the day Denis Kelly’s excellent effort in his very first competitive round was a huge achievement, both for Denis and his lovely but inexperienced mare. There’ll be many more such days to come but the first will stick in the memory.

Joanne McBride got her competitive riding club career off to a very eye-catching start with a lovely training round followed by a very accomplished competition round. Likewise, newcomer Laura McGowan rode a really super round on her lovely big cob. And our newest of new members, Tommy McGettigan — hardly a week in the club — rode the incomparable Armstrong to a nonchalant victory in the Intermediate class. At least it was nonchalant for Armstrong — Tommy was practically in need of oxygen after his first competitive experience on one of the club’s heroes.

There was a short delay in proceedings following Julie O’Neill’s fall in the Advanced Primary competition. It’s always reassuring to see that our safety procedures, which so often seem so theoretical, actually work in practice. The incident was expertly and calmly handled, Julie was taken to hospital in an ambulance to be checked out, but to everybody’s (particularly Bruce’s) immense relief, she returned later in the afternoon with a clean bill of health and was able to enjoy part of the advanced level action from the canteen area.

It was lovely to see some cameras back out after their winter hibernation. It’s still difficult to get clear action shots in the indoor, even with the sunshine, but at least we can finally see some faces. The Letterkenny batteries called it a day after the Primary training but hopefully Packie and Carmel have captured some of the ativity later in the programme. See our Gallery for some of the day’s action and atmosphere. Orla and Martina (or Des!) may be able to add to the collection.

Full results to follow but, in the meantime, congratulations to everybody who participated, particularly to those who placed. And a big thank you as always to everybody who helped out in any way on the day.

Friday flatwork on foot – the challenge of bowls

Friday’s bowls evening in Ramelton proved a great success and tuned up member’s flatwork brains in anticipation of Sunday’s North West League. There were no horses involved for this Friday session but the requisite sporting skill proved a bit more sophisticated than at the Christmas 12-pin bowling.

Tanya and Audrey, assisted by equally talented and experienced family members, demonstrated the precision sport they compete in regularly and then watched while the novices came to terms with the two-sided bowling ball and the obstacle to be navigated on the “green”. Not easy, but definitely intriguing. People were hooked.

By close of play it was time to relax the pressure and head for a pint next door at Durcans. It was all anybody could do to resist the temptation of the karaoke session downstairs. We’ll keep that in reserve for another good night out!

Sunshine blazes for Gortin meet

Any of our members heading out for today’s midweek meet of the Donegal Harriers at Gortin should be in for a treat. The weather has come good right at the last moment and the territory couldn’t be better. The estate at Gortin belongs to Lucinda Blakiston Houston, chairman of the Strule Valley Riding Club. She attended our crossjump last summer and reciprocated with the invitation to the team show jumping challenge at Ecclesville in November.

Pictured below: Rachel and Spitfire (Annatelle) at the Donegal Harriers meet at Gortin, 2010. Spitfire was only carrying a fraction of the estate on her face!

Adjusted points table for North West League

There was a bit of a quandary about how to incorporate the HC/training class riders on the league points table after the first show last week. In the spirit of the riding clubs movement, the table has now been updated to acknowledge every rider who participated at the event. Stars for your copybook!

Flatwork with a few stripes

Kelda’s classes at Cyril’s on Friday evening were blessed by the only dry hours on an otherwise thoroughly miserable day. It was a chilly but fine night and two sets of riders benefitted from jumping-related flatwork exercises. The major emphasis was on achieving effective transitions and on asking the horses to lengthen and shorten their strides — all key components of riding a good round of show jumps.

A very simple exercise with two striped poles was used to gauge the natural working trot stride of each horse. It was then the rider’s objective to ride the same distance in two strides more and two strides less. Simple but effective and highly relevant to show jumping.

It was good to see some fresh faces in the arena. Laura McGowan was there on her lovely big cob while Denis Kelly, who joined last year but had problems with his horse, was also out enjoying himself on his good coloured cob.

Kelda will be teaching a second evening at Cyril’s on Friday 25 February. This coming Friday, 18 February, we’re going to bowl in Ramelton. No horse needed!

Three new members join the club

Membership of the club continues to grow. A very large proportion of long-standing members have already renewed their subscriptions for 2011. At the same time we’re busy welcoming brand new members at a healthy rate. Three newcomers have jumped on board in the last couple of weeks.

Laura McGowan from Ballybofey is a primary school teacher who spends every spare minute on or near a horse. She currently has three horses; a six yearold hairy-legged Irish cob gelding called Cappry Jack, a five year old coloured sport horse gelding named Lightening Jack, and a three year old mare, Miss Jessie, who is being broken at the moment. After ten years of trail riding Laura started taking lessons two years ago and is just getting started in her show jumping career.

Hillary McGettigan, originally from Kildare but now living near Kilmacrennan, has ten years under her belt in Donegal. A graduate of the pony club in her childhood, Hillary got back in the saddle two years ago. She currently has the easy-going Millie on loan and the two have enjoyed the season’s hunting at a gentle pace.

Joanne McBride is originally from Tyrone but has been living in Letterkenny for just over a year now. For Joanne it’s been horses on the brain since the age of 6. She still has her first pony Sidney, now the grand old age of 22 but still acting like a 3 year old. She also has Betty, a 7 year old Thoroughbred by Deploy currently on livery at Harley’s yard in Trentagh. Betty believes she’s the next Houdini!

ILDRA ride-out date for your early summer diary

ILDRA, the Irish Long Distance Riding association, meet annually at the Baronscourt Estate in County Tyrone. This year the ride takes place earlier in the calendar than normal on Sunday 8 May. Rachel and Marina have both enjoyed this event immensely in past years, as Rachel’s account from 2010 illustrates.

Definitely something to pencil in to the calendar. To find out more, visit ILDRA’s website.
