2014 subscriptions now due

Moving our AGM to early November from its traditional spot in December has played havoc with our subscription payment routine. However, this is now your official reminder that your 2014 membership subscription is due. You should make cheques payable to Letterkenny Riding Club and get them to Francis as quickly as possible (Francis McNicholl, Anney, Kerrykeel, Co Donegal).

As many of you know, our mother organisation, the Association of Irish Riding Clubs (AIRC) has dropped its share of our subscription by €5 but we have decided to leave our club subscription at the same level as 2013 — €100 for riding members and €40 for non-riders. This allows the club a slight financial buffer zone and saves us having to fundraise through other means throughout the year. If we run a surplus, the funds will be invested for the benefit of all in club equipment, training, etc.

Club officers should note that their subscriptions are particularly urgent since the club cannot register for 2014 without its officers’ memberships being fully paid up! No pressure…

Long overdue news round-up!

Four weeks is a long time to catch up on in riding club life but we’ll give it our best shot with a compendium of snippets and reports from all directions!

The biggest news on the people front is that John and Sharon finally tied the knot in early November. They chose a lovely spot in Rathmullan House and celebrated in intimate style with family and close friends. A select number of riding club members went along on the evening just to keep an eye on things and reported sightings of John in a kilt, surrounded by very happy guests. Many congratulations to you, John and Sharon. You’re a great couple and we wish you a long future of happiness with each other and your children.

Hazel has been a rare sight at riding club events over the past several months as she commuted back to England almost weekly to spend time with her father during his illness. Very sadly, her father died recently and we extend our deepest sympathy to both Hazel and Don.

The most remarkable news on the people front is that Jenny is now the proud owner of a mobile phone. If proof were ever needed that life is full of surprises, this is surely it! Jenny, we hope you enjoy your arrival in the age of texting and voice messages. You’ve surrendered your independence forever now!

Riding activity has been focussed largely on the North West Autumn League but before we get to that in detail, let’s not forget the flatwork evening at Glenleary Stables with instruction from the inimitable Mary Finneran. Louise was responsible for the evening’s action and she mustered sufficient numbers to create a competitive games session. For those of you who are not familiar with mounted games in a flatwork lesson, don’t miss the next opportunity to try it. There’s nothing as suitable for making you use all your aids correctly and efficiently than a bit of competition and a few demands on the athletic front. Both riders and horses enjoyed the session thoroughly and left with broad smiles on their faces.

Rachel’s Tuesday Club continues quietly with Maura, Cyril and Eweline making steady progress. A communications failure left Maura with a one-on-one session last week and she made the most of the individual tuition to take the mighty leap to canter with Bonzo. A great achievement!

The North West Autumn League was the usual welcome return to Templemore and the tried and tested format of competitive classes interspersed with training rounds. There was an excellent turn-out at the first two legs, with a surprisingly quiet day at the final. As always, clashes with the hunting calendar are inevitable and for several members from all the Donegal clubs, the seasonal call of the hunting horn is simply irresistible. (Ask the horses their view on that particular subject…)

It was a quiet enough league for Letterkenny but several members did exceptionally well and were proud recipients of rosettes and prizes on the night of the dinner dance. Eweline beamed from ear to ear as she received her glorious blue rosette for the cross poles division —  a particular sweet honour since she and Gordon have only recently taken up jumping. At Advance Primary level it was left to Enda to grasp a rosette as his new partnership with Jenny blossomed.

Anne Chambers put in her usual game effort at the highly competitive Intermediate level and was rewarded with a ribbon. So too was Tanya who enjoyed her return to 90cm fences with Al. And at Advanced Intermediate our club really took the limelight. In an inspired move designed to get herself and Molly out of a deepening rut, Nadine took over the ride on Millie for the league, leaving Damien to partner Molly. The initiative bore fruit for all parties. Nadine thoroughly enjoyed herself on the ongoing Millie and readily claimed the red rosette for the league division as well as being crowned overall leading rider. Damien did great work with Molly only to be denied a third outing with her as she took a sick day for the final. With Armstrong as a B string in the yard, that fortunately wasn’t a disaster and Damien made the third spot in the league. His tie at the dinner dance was carefully chosen to match his yellow rosette. No such sartorial flair was shown by Cormac who divided the two Gallaghers in taking second place. None of that mattered however when Cormac claimed all the glory for his victorious Horsey Oscar nomination at the Dinner Dance. Well done Cormac!

And so to the dinner dance itself. Little needs to be said: If you were there on the night, you know just what a brilliant event it was (and if you missed it, we don’t want to make you jealous). There was a great turnout from Letterkenny and we all thoroughly enjoyed a night of mighty craic with a big crowd of good friends. Thank you, Donegal Riding Clubs, for such a wonderful spirit of camaraderie and friendship. And thanks very particularly to Ruth and Rachael who did such a magnificent and characteristically understated job of organising the entire event. We really appreciate your effort and your great sense of humour.

And that just about sums things up. Hopefully news will be a little more regular from here on as we all look forward to the coming festive season and enjoyable action on the club front. Jiving classes have been suggested…

Great reports from North West Autumn League

Website coverage of club activity has been rare over the past three weeks but normal service should begin again at the weekend. In the meantime, for any of you who haven’t already spotted it, you’ll enjoy the Gaeltachts’ version of NWL events on their website.

Congratulations to everybody who participated at the league and to those who turned out to help. In particular, well done to Nadine on her great victory with Millie in the combined Advanced Intermediate & Open division of the league. Now make sure you all come along to the Dinner Dance to enjoy the prize-giving!

Not to be missed: Donegal Clubs Dinner Dance & Horsey Oscars, Saturday 30 November

Next Saturday, 30 November, is one of the most eagerly anticipated evenings on the equestrian world’s social calendar. It’s time for our 2nd Annual Donegal Riding Clubs Dinner Dance & Awards. If last year’s inaugural event is anything to go by, we’re in for a truly great night of food, conversation, dancing and good old-fashioned craic.

If you haven’t got your tickets yet, contact Rachael or Ruth McCrossan without further delay. The big bash takes place at the Station House Hotel in Letterkenny (that’s the one down by the old Dunnes) and dinner will be served at 8pm. It will be followed by the prizegiving for the Northwest Autumn League and “The Horsey Oscars”. The oscars will be presented to one member from each club, nominated by their own club members. If you didn’t have a chance to nominate your candidates for our club at yesterday’s league final, text or email them to Rachael McCrossan (rachaelmcc@eircom.net/087 212 8031).

The big night will conclude with riotous dancing to a hard-pressed DJ and who knows what time everything will draw to a close. For some memories of last year’s event, see the Gaeltacht’s Gallery!

Table quiz, Thursday 21 November

Cormac, who contributes a huge amount of time and effort to St Vincent de Paul, is keen to field a team or two of riding club members at the Letterkenny Lions Club annual table quiz this Thursday, 21 November. The quiz takes place at the Golf Club and promises a wealth of excellent prizes on top of a great evening’s entertainment. Best of all, the event is in aid of two very deserving charities, St Vincent de Paul and the Loft Youth Project (in which our very own Orla plays a pivotal role).

If you’d like to take your chances, contact Cormac as soon as possible on 087 251 4417. He’ll compose as many teams as interest generates.

Donegal Clubs meeting, Tuesday 19 November

Since some form of structural reorganisation of the region is on the agenda, there will be a meeting of the five Donegal clubs this Tuesday evening in Tir na nOg in advance of the western region AGM on Friday at Markree Castle in Sligo. As always, all members are welcome to attend. If you’d like to raise an issue but can’t attend, contact Cormac or Libby in advance of Tuesday’s meeting.

A healthy mixture of continuity and change after our 2013 AGM

There’s no doubt it felt a bit odd gathering in earliest November for our AGM when tradition dictates that it falls in the festive December season. We’re an adaptable bunch however and the healthy number of members who attended Friday night’s meeting got on with both the official business and the business of socialising without further ado.

Damien, Cormac and Francis delivered comprehensive reports wearing their official Chairman’s, Secretary’s and Treasurer’s hats respectively. Happily we’re still in a comfortable financial position and in general the same can be said about the overall health of the club. However, Damien voiced some well-founded concerns about the decline in the success of our Friday evening activities. Lack of time and money are obvious contributing factors but we have never fallen at these hurdles in the past. Later in the meeting the point was discussed in greater detail and all agreed that more rigorous advance planning of the weekly events is imperative. If we make a habit of doing things regularly, we take it in our stride. If events don’t happen as planned, we fall out of the habit of attending and begin to believe that events will be cancelled. And we all need to adopt afresh the belief that the success of the Friday evening activities rests on our personal shoulders, not somebody else’s.

The officer’s reports nevertheless highlighted the fact that we have a very full calendar and a very active club life. There were notable achievements throughout the year, in competitive and personal terms, and we were well represented at the majority of national events throughout the country. Cormac wisely drew attention to our failure to field a team for the team dressage qualifiers and many share his sentiment. Despite the fact that we have a strong dressage riding core within the club, the logistics and finances of travelling to the qualifier (and then, heaven forbid, the National Championships!) are daunting.

A particular topic for discussion was our Derby & Dressage Show which suffered again in 2013 from shockingly low participant numbers and a whopping financial loss. Notwithstanding these problems it was agreed fairly universally that we should persist with the event. It is absolutely imperative that we run the show in May when members are still in competitive mode after the long sequence of spring events.

Moving on to the election of officers for 2014 there was a mixture of continuity and change. After two very successful and deeply appreciated years at the helm, Damien handed over the reins of the club to Enda who takes over as Chairman. Maura takes over as Treasurer from near neighbour Francis, while Cormac stays on in the Secretary’s hot seat. Amongst the lesser positions there was a certain degree of change and the full role of honour reads as follows:

Chairperson Enda McClafferty
Treasurer Maura McNicholl
Secretary Cormac McCormack
Vice Chairperson Paddy Gallagher
Asst Treasurer Libby Carton
Asst Secretary Ann Chambers
Joint show secretaries  Tanya Jacob, Nadine Gallagher
Chief safety officer Paddy Gallagher
Asst Safety officers Keary Smith, Ann Chambers, Marina Hamilton, Cyril Higgins, Jenny Coe, Damien Gallagher, Francis McNicholl
Club grading officer Audrey Jacob
Child welfare officer Orla O’Reilly
Events coordinators (NWL)

Team Show Jumping coordinators Leo Porter, Francis McNicholl
PROs Libby Carton, Louise Edwards
Website Libby Carton
Club promotional gear coordinator Jenny Coe
Prize purchaser Ann Chambers
Regional delegates Cormac McCormack, Libby Carton

There was plenty of further reflection on events in 2013 and anticipation of the coming 12 months before the official proceedings concluded with the awarding of our coveted awards for Club Member and Club Horse of the Year. The two immensely popular winners were Francis and Cool, both of whom truly embody everything that is wonderful about our club. Many congratulations. (Full awards report and photos shortly.)
