The big bump

Our over-sized club treasurer Sharon Lee was spotted today on cheque book duty with assistant treasurer, Rachel. The pair were taking measures to ensure that things run smoothly during Sharon’s imminent maternity leave. The Bump is VERY big and Sharon is due any day now. So far things have been going well and we wish her and John the very best of luck in the final countdown.

Would anybody like to open a book on how long it will take Sharon to get back in the saddle after giving birth? We could begin by deciding whether bets should be made in weeks, days or hours…

This isn’t the only potential riding club member en route this summer. Elaine O’Sullivan and her husband Shane are expecting their first baby in August.

Chasing optimum times across Castleshanaghan country

No need for words to describe last night’s cross country session – the pictures do the talking. Many thanks to Audrey and Tanya for inviting us to their freshly-cut silage fields on a wonderful midsummer’s evening. We left without removing the markers so maybe we’ll be back…

Teagasc demonstration evenings for mare owners

Teagasc have announced details of dates and venues for upcoming demonstration evenings organised to inform mare owners on the format of this autumn’s mare inspections, what’s involved and how best to prepare. Sligo is our closest venue.

These demo’s will be of interest to anyone with an interest in conformation assessment, loose movement and loose jumping assessment as well as correct turnout, in hand presentation of horses and training for this and loose work. All these aspects will be touched on. The Teagasc equine team will be on hand to offer advice and also Phillip Scott who is currently an inspector for Horse Sport Ireland. Horse Sport Ireland representatives will be on hand to answer queries with regard to the inspections. Bluegrass horse nutritionist will also be there to inform on mare nutrition, condition scoring, and how best to engage and adapt feeding and fittening programmes for inspections which could of course be related likewise to preparation for sales for example.

All sessions are due to start at 7pm sharp and will be finished for 9.30pm. All of these demonstrations are free and all are welcome on the night.

7 yr old 16hh mare with great riding club potential for sale

With no time to devote to her riding, Mandy Blaney has reluctantly decided to sell her mare, Missy. Missy is a very good looking bay half-bred type, approximately 16hh and 7 years old. She’s full of character and is forward going. Good to shoe and box. She’s happy hacking out, jumping, and showed promise when Damien schooled her cross country last summer.

Mandy feels she deserves a chance to develop her potential and will make an ideal partner for a riding club or older pony club rider with the time and the ability to bring her on. She has a passport and is fully vaccinated. The offer of a good home is the most important factor in selling her.

Weekend news from Glenleary to Galway

From a freshly mown field in Donegal to the venerable showgrounds of Clarinbridge, our members were out in numbers over another magnificent weekend.

Friday evening’s jumping lesson at Lenamore was held in the sand arena and Kelda got her seven pupils plenty warm despite the chilly breeze from the north. Gridwork demanded a lot of effort from both horses and riders but everybody enjoyed the lesson greatly. New member Michelle O’Rourke made her maiden riding club appearance and everybody enjoyed meeting her for the first time.

Mary Finneran and Orla presented a wonderful event at Glenleary on Sunday. The show field was beautifully prepared with three competition arenas, three warm-up arenas and ample parking. The good weather and sociable atmosphere brought back memories of local gymkhanas in Rathmullan and Kerrykeel in the past. The spirit of enthusiasm and enjoyment was identical but the diversity of the schedule and the quality of the riding showed how much the equestrian scene in the area has developed over thirty years.

Although mixed children+adult events are always a lot of fun, it’s usually the little whippersnappers that whup ass in the competitions that matter. It’s ridiculous how fearless those little peckers are. But we kept them firmly in their place in a respectable number of classes, most notably when Nadine and Francis were the only riders to go clear in the Open jumping class over a meter. Francis, suffering from a chronic case of second-itis on Zak, left two poles on the ground in the jump-off and handed the trophy to Nadine who delivered a characteristic immaculate clear round. Full results for our club members are posted below.

Sandwiches and salad dishes worthy of Royal Ascot were provided at no cost throughout the day and Mary produced bottles of white wine to round off a most enjoyable event.

Meanwhile, hundreds of kilometres away in Galway, Erica and Britney (Clonigulane Lass) were in action in the Springmount R.C. classes at the Galway County Show on Saturday. They got a rosette for going clear in the clear round jumping before going on to the Intermediate individual class. Finishing clear on a time of 72.03 when the time allowed was 72.00, their 1 time fault dropped them to 6th, a great result in a class of 21. Erica was delighted with how Britney went for her.

Returning to the show grounds on Sunday for the County Show, the pair had another 6th, this time for showing in the ridden small hunter. Britney went beautifully for Erica but not so well for the judge when he rode her with very heavy hands!

Erica plans to head next to the Finn Valley Show at Killygordon this Saturday where several other members will be competing on the day.

Friday evening at Lenamore cancelled

This Friday’s clear round jumping at Lenamore has been cancelled. Marina feels we’re caught between a rock and a hard place with the going underfoot. The grass surface is very hard at present whereas the going in the arena is very, very deep.

Richard Smyth’s league in Victoria Bridge might be a good alternative for anybody who’s desperate to get out jumping. Remember also that we have our cross country at Audrey and Tanya’s farm this Wednesday. Because the ground has been protected by the heavy growth of grass for silage, we’re confident that the going will be safe.

Equine-orientated workshops in Sligo

Whitethorn Equine Healing have contacted the club with information about forthcoming workshops at their base in Sligo. Two workshops are planned:

· Herbs & Oils for Equine Health

· Shiatsu for Equines

Carly Hillier of Whitethorn explains that “the purpose of these workshops is to empower horse owners/carers to provide better quality healthcare thus reducing and preventing the occurrence of sickness & disease – and of course associated expenses!”

Errigal Polocrosse Club now up and running

The recent meeting of riders interested in polocrosse has led to the formation of the Errigal Polocrosse Club. Open to both adults and children, the club trains every second Thursday at whatever venue is available. Ball handling skills are practiced on and off the ponies, dependent on the venue, and the training session is followed by a friendly match.

Learn more about it on the club website: Errigal Polocrosse Club.

Another cross country evening planned for Wednesday at Audrey and Tanya’s

Audrey and Tanya are making their freshly cut silage fields in Castleshanaghan available for a cross country session this Wednesday evening at 7.30. The format will be the same as our recent evening at Marina’s with riders being timed around a course with no jumping obstacles.

It’s an ideal opportunity for novice riders to gain experience riding across open ground. For more advanced riders, it’s a great chance to get a feel for your and your horse’s speed and tempo in relation to the AIRC’s optimum times for cross country competitions.
