Looking from one Friday back to another

Our regular Friday evening activities get overshadowed occasionally by competitive events on a Sunday. Last Friday evening’s ride-out at Moorefield, near Ramelton, was a  most enjoyable affair for the five riders who took their chances with the squally weather and came out bone dry and happy at the end of a lovely hack.

Erica described the expedition which started at about 7.30 with herself, Paddy, Finbar, Maura and Francis setting off on a lovely grassy bridle path through the woods. Turning up past Tony McCaul’s house with his horses in the yard, they started a steady downhill trek admiring all the good land and views around them. The group then headed back uphill passing more fab land, farms and farmhouses that they all admired. Paddy and Erica took a detour up a grassy lane for a nice long canter while Francis, Maura and Finbar waited patiently for them at the start of the lane. When they were all reunited they walked on home, coming full circle back through the grassy lanes to return to their starting point.

The horses were all very well behaved and settled. All five horses ranged in age from 15 to 20 and proved very safe and sensible. Everyone enjoyed themselves. For anybody who missed last week’s ride, Dawn Howard has said that we’re welcome to park at her house again if we feel like doing another rideout from Moorefield.

Thanks again to Dawn for accommodating us and particularly to Erica for arranging and leading the ride.

Intensive TREC orienteering training, Saturday 11 June

Donegal TREC are hosting their next event on Saturday 11 June. The evening will comprise intensive TREC orienteering training with TREC Ireland trainers Gwen Bastian and Karen Murphy. This will be a very practical and useful session for anyone interested in competing in TREC events and will include: general TREC information session, orienteering theory, on foot training (using your compass and the all important how to not get lost!), and map room / route copying skills. Then there will be the opportunity to do a driven route to put these skills
into practice.

For further details or to book a place contact Orla by text on 087 643 2458
or email oreilly.orla@gmail.com.

Hold the date for Donegal TREC’s upcoming events:

16–17 July   TREC festival, Ramelton, Co. Donegal
Training on the 16th and level one and two 3-phase competitions on the 17th
(overnight camping/accommodation available).

Details of Regional Training Day, Cloncaw EC, Sunday 19 June

This year sees the introduction of a very welcome second regional training day in the Western region’s calendar. Flowerhill is a wonderful venue for the usual training day but it’s too far to travel for the majority of the Donegal clubs’ members. Cloncaw Equestrian Centre in Glaslough is a much handier alternative and will hopefully be achievable for a good number.

Training is available in any two of the three standard disciplines — dressage, show jumping and cross country. Full details are available to download below. Booking is through Orla and further queries should be made to Rachael McCrossan of the Gaeltachts on 087 212 8031.
