John never made it to Millers Hill this year but Sharon put in a brief appearance and managed to get some photographs of the one dry hour we enjoyed on Saturday afternoon. The grey sky overhead is full of rain but the very impressive black cloud that could be seen to the far north westContinue reading “More Millers Hill”

Hunter trials at Castle Leslie, Saturday 9 October
Some snooping on the Castle Leslie RC website has thrown up a real gem: it looks like Castle Leslie (the equestrian centre, not the club) are planning a hunter trial for Saturday 9 October. More news as it’s unearthed…
Harvest time on horseback
Normally at this time of year we ride along the roads looking wishfully into those beautiful big fields as the silage is cut and the corn harvested. Last night we found ourselves on the right side of the fence and enjoyed a spectacular autumn evening of childish fun careering around the freshly cut headlands ofContinue reading “Harvest time on horseback”
Early autumn cross country evening at Audrey & Tanya’s, Thursday 2 September
Audrey and Tanya hope to squeeze the very last gasp out of the waning summer daylight with a cross country evening at their farm in Castleshanaghan this Thursday. The silage has been cut and Audrey plans to make jumps around the headlands of the fields so that we can enjoy an early-autumn cross country adrenalinContinue reading “Early autumn cross country evening at Audrey & Tanya’s, Thursday 2 September”
Annual ‘End of Summer Show’ at Deanes, Sunday 22 August
The AIRC’s big event this weekend is the National Dressage Championships but, since it takes place in Tipperary, it’s hardly surprising that none of our members are competing. A more local alternative is Deane’s End of Summer Show in Bruckless where you can try your hand and hooves at dressage, show jumping and cross country.Continue reading “Annual ‘End of Summer Show’ at Deanes, Sunday 22 August”
Pre-ODE cross country schooling
There’ll be two opportunities to school over cross country obstacles before the 1-day event at Glaslough on Sunday 11 July, provided we get some rain to soften the concrete ground. We’re booked in to school at Gabriel’s this Tuesday, 29 June. On Thursday 8 July we plan on going to Peter Mulrine’s land in Stranorlar. ThereContinue reading “Pre-ODE cross country schooling”
Chasing optimum times across Castleshanaghan country
No need for words to describe last night’s cross country session – the pictures do the talking. Many thanks to Audrey and Tanya for inviting us to their freshly-cut silage fields on a wonderful midsummer’s evening. We left without removing the markers so maybe we’ll be back… Pictured below: Catherine Higgins in action on Connaught. MoreContinue reading “Chasing optimum times across Castleshanaghan country”
Another cross country evening planned for Wednesday at Audrey and Tanya’s
Audrey and Tanya are making their freshly cut silage fields in Castleshanaghan available for a cross country session this Wednesday evening at 7.30. The format will be the same as our recent evening at Marina’s with riders being timed around a course with no jumping obstacles. It’s an ideal opportunity for novice riders to gainContinue reading “Another cross country evening planned for Wednesday at Audrey and Tanya’s”
Cross country session enjoyed by both horses and riders
Friday evening’s cross country session at Marina’s place in St Johnston was a great success. Rachel marked out a 1700 meter course through two hilly fields and a section of the old Londonderry & Lough Swilly railway track that runs along the banks of the Foyle at the bottom of Marina’s family’s farm. Staking theContinue reading “Cross country session enjoyed by both horses and riders”
AIRC Western Region Training Day
The Western Region’s annual training day takes place on Sunday 11 July at Flowerhill EC, County Galway. Training is available in three disciplines – cross country, show jumping and dressage. It’s a long way to travel for a day but it’s reportedly a very worthwhile event and some members might like to make a weekendContinue reading “AIRC Western Region Training Day”
